Electric Heating: 3 expert tips to reduce your electricity bill

1 min read

As temperatures drop, heating often accounts for the largest portion of your electricity bill. Many homes in our region are still equipped with old convection heaters—often called "grille-pains" (toasters)—which consume a lot of energy while providing poor comfort.

As an electrician, I often see that just a few adjustments can lead to real savings without sacrificing comfort. Here are 3 ways to optimize your electric heating.

1. Replace Old Convectors with Inertia Radiators

Old convection heaters heat the air aggressively, causing it to rise straight to the ceiling. The result: cold feet and a hot head. Inertia radiators (fluid or dry) diffuse a gentle and consistent heat. They continue to provide warmth even after they are turned off. This is an investment that immediately improves thermal comfort and reduces energy consumption.

2. The Importance of Regulation (Thermostats)

The secret to saving money is heating only when necessary. Installing a regulation system or a programmable thermostat allows you to adapt the temperature to your lifestyle.

  • Comfort Mode (19°C): For when you are at home.

  • Eco Mode (16-17°C): For when you are at work or during the night. Lowering the temperature from 20°C to 19°C can save approximately 7% in energy costs!

Today, very simple connected solutions exist. There is no need for major construction: I can install small modules behind your existing radiators (via the pilot wire) or a central unit directly in your electrical panel. This allows you to control the whole house, room by room, from your smartphone.

3. Don’t Neglect Maintenance

It sounds simple, but it is often forgotten: dust your radiators! Accumulated dust prevents heat from diffusing properly and can create unpleasant odors. Also, ensure that the air intake and outlet grilles are not obstructed by furniture or curtains.
