Old Wiring: Is it time to bring your electrical installation up to code?

Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and the surrounding region are full of magnificent historic homes. While stone walls have undeniable charm, the original electrical installations can represent an invisible danger. A system that worked perfectly 30 years ago is no longer adapted to our modern lifestyles.

Why is it crucial to have your installation checked? Here are three main reasons:

1. Safety First (Preventing Fire)

Regulations evolve for one reason: safety. Old installations often feature crumbling fabric-sheathed wiring, ungrounded outlets, or obsolete porcelain fuse holders. The risk of short circuits and fires is real. A safety upgrade allows for the replacement of the most dangerous elements without necessarily rewiring the entire house.

2. The "30mA Differential": Personal protection

This is the most important component of a modern electrical panel. The 30mA residual current device (RCD) detects even the slightest current leak (for example, if a child puts a finger in an outlet or a washing machine is faulty) and cuts the power in a fraction of a second. If your panel is not equipped with one, you are not effectively protected against electrocution. This is often the first thing I install during a renovation.

3. Protecting Your Modern Appliances

Our needs have changed. Today, we plug in computers, induction hobs, heat pumps, and more. An old installation is not sized for this level of power. As a result, fuses blow, wires overheat, and your expensive electronic devices risk being damaged by unstable voltage.

Did you know? In the event of a claim, some insurance companies may reduce compensation if the installation was clearly dangerous and poorly maintained.

In doubt about your installation? I offer a quick safety diagnostic. I check for proper grounding, the condition of the panel, and identify major risks.
